YWCA LAUNCHES A COMMUNITY PARTICIPATORY APPROACH PROJECT TOWARDS ENDING VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS IN ZAMBIA!

PROJECT VISION:
“Enhanced community participation towards ending violence against women and girl.”
PROJECT GOAL
‘’Violence Against women prevented and mitigated through a community participatory approach and incidences of violence of Human rights reduced especially in rural Zambia where access to justice and information is limited.

Key Project Activities:
The key project activities include provision of Psycho- social counselling, legal advice, referrals, temporal protection shelter for survivors of violence, training vulnerable women in entrepreneurial skills, advocacy and awareness activities such as production and dissemination of information, education and communication (IEC)materials and press releases, Research and documentation of best practices, training of media, traditional leaders, para –legal, police, judiciary and parliamentarian on Violence against Women and Girls and formation/ strengthening of Men’s network as change agents, Child rights clubs and survivor network.
There are countless women and girls that are exploited and exposed to violence everyday in Zambia and the world over. The extent of this atrocity is impossible to measure due to a number of contributing factors which include failure to report sexual and physical violence especially when it occurs within the domestic sphere, lack of awareness of human rights and lack of availability of service providers for abuse of victims especially in the rural areas. Some widely practiced negative traditions also contribute to promoting the culture of silence that discourages disclosure of violence that occurs within a home. As a result acts of violence continue and victims of such abuse especially women and girls continue to suffer in silence.
YWCA is of the view that if rural areas are not targeted, the fight against Violence against Women and girls will be won. This project will contribute to the success of the UN campaign to unite and End Violence against women 2008 to 2013 especially in attaining the following goals; strengthen data collection on the prevalence of violence against women and girls. Adopt and implement a multi – sectoral national plan and increase public awareness and social mobilization. Strategies that will be used include, Research, capacity building. Advocacy and awareness raising, involving men, traditional leaders and survivor networks as change agent and community participatory mobilization approach.
